Why Cync Feels Like a Genuine Upgrade Over Older Smart Lighting Apps

If you have been stuck with the clunky C by GE app for a while, the new Cync smart home app actually fixes the core annoyances—connection drops and slow responses. I paired it with a mix of older C by GE bulbs and a new Cync Outdoor Smart Plug, and the first thing I noticed was how the home screen adapts to what I use most. Instead of digging through menus, the app surfaces the kitchen lights or the outdoor string lights right when I need them. It still has Wi-Fi dependency, though, so if your router is far from the devices, expect occasional lag.

TrueImage and Color Matching: Useful but Not Perfect

The patented TrueImage feature lets you snap a photo of a room and then tap colors on the screen to change the actual light color. I tested this in my living room—pointed the phone at a beige wall, selected a warmer tint, and the bulbs matched surprisingly well. But here is the catch: it only works if your bulbs support full color range. The cheaper Cync white tunable bulbs ignore the RGB values entirely. Also, the double color wheel for advanced control is great for matching paint swatches, but you need to be patient because the app processes the image locally; slow phones can cause a few seconds of delay.

Grouping Devices Within Rooms – A Small but Smart Improvement

One pain point in the old app was that you had to create separate rooms for every subgroup—like “Kitchen Island” and “Kitchen Ceiling Fan.” With Cync you can create groups inside a single room. For example, in my “Living Room” group, I placed the lamp, the ceiling light, and the smart plug for the TV backlight. Now I can turn on just the lamp without toggling the whole room. However, the group naming is limited to 20 characters, and you cannot nest groups further. If you have complex setups (six sub-areas per room), you will still get a bit cramped.

Reliability and Speed: Better, but Not Flawless

After using the app daily for two weeks, I experienced a faster connection to most devices—usually under two seconds to change color. The app also reconnects quickly after a Wi-Fi outage. But the stability is not perfect: sometimes the indoor smart camera feed freezes for a second when switching to two-way audio. And if you have more than 15 devices, the dynamic home screen occasionally fails to show your most used products and instead shows a default list. The dark theme is a nice touch for bedtime, but it only applies to the main interface, not to the camera live view.

What You Cannot Do and Who Should Skip This App

Cync is only for GE‑branded smart home devices. If you have Philips Hue or other brands, this app will not add them. Also, voice control works with Alexa and Google, but Siri Shortcuts are not supported—no HomeKit integration. I found the app’s scheduling feature reliable for daily routines (like turning on the porch light at sunset), but geofencing based on phone location is missing. So if you need the lights to turn off automatically when you leave the house, you will need to set a time schedule instead. For someone who already owns GE smart lighting, the Cync smart home app is a meaningful improvement. If you are starting from scratch with a mixed ecosystem, look elsewhere.
