How to Throw a Fun and Memorable Baby Shower – Curate the Menu

A party is not a party without food and drinks. An array of interesting and tasty food will complete the fun and make the party truly a memorable one, but a table full of tasteless food can also ruin and the fun and experience of everyone invited.

Hence, what you put on the table must not be left out on the priority, but taken into much consideration. Let alone, consider your guests dietary needs and concerns in choosing what to have on the menu.

Now, first of all your menu does not need to be too fancy. There are a lot of dishes that are simple and easy to prepare, but very tasty and invigorating. Decide based on your theme, number of guests and venue. Especially, the mom-to-be’s preferences. After all, it’s her you are celebrating.

Unless you are hiring a catering service or ordering food a restaurant, choose menu that you and other family and friends of the mom-to-be who would want to help, can easily put together. You can have finger foods, grilled chicken or meat, vegetable or fruit salads, homemade pizza or calzone, tarts, cookies, cupcakes and the likes. Go for simple comfort foods that incredibly tasty and mouthwatering.

Now, yes you must have variety on your menu, but one thing that shouldn’t be missing, even in any party and a baby shower in a particular is the CAKE. It is the centerpiece of presentation. The idea is while you have “the” cake for your centerpiece, it’s great to have more than one cake in different flavors. Your guests might have different preferences for cake or they could be something each guests could try while having tea or coffee, and may serve as something for the guests to bring home.

Here are some baby shower cakes or cupcakes that are guaranteed to sell and are proven favorites:

  1.   Cheese Cakes
  2.   Rainbow Cakes
  3.   Vanilla Pound Cakes
  4.   Lemon Cakes
  5.   Hummingbird Cakes
  6.   Chocolate Cakes and Cupcakes
  7.   Sprinkles Strawberry Cakes and Cupcakes
  8.   Banana Cakes and Cupcakes
  9.   Honey Cinnamon Frosted Cakes
  10.   Carrot Cakes
  11.   Salted Caramel Cakes
  12.   Truffle or Chocolate Mouse
  13.   Coffee with Cinnamon Cakes
  14.   Apple Cider Doughnut Cakes
  15.   Coconut Cakes
  16.   Butter Cakes
  17.   Apple, Pineapple, and Mango  Pie Cakes
  18.   Pumpkin Cakes and Cupcakes
  19.   Red Velvet Cakes
  20.   Peanut Butter or Butter Cakes

These cakes are easy to bake, and some does not even need baking. So many “how to” video tutorials you can find online to help you come up with any of these cakes.

Now for your drinks, you can have some fruits or veggie juices, smoothies, coffee or tea, and some alcohol-free mocktails or punch made frozen fruits blended with lemon syrup and sparkling water.

Finally, no mater what you serve. Often it adds to have some presentation: insteresting glassware and colorful plating, then add a little bit of art in the way the dishes or food are arranged and presented. Present your menu in such a way that they are not only satisfying to eat, but a delight to behold. It’s like you don’t want to eat them because they look so good, but once you start eating, you can’t stop.

How to Plan a Baby Shower – First Time to Host

Planning for a baby shower can be a little bit of like planning a wedding or a bridal shower for that matter. As a host of the party, you would want it to be perfect in every way, and you would want the party to be fun and memorable, especially for the mom-to-be or parents-to-be.

Now, if it’s your first time to host, it is  quite understandable that you don’t know where to start or what to expect. At the same time, you want it to be special for yourself as well.

Now I’m pretty sure the pressure is on and you may be stressing right now.

Well guess what? It ain’t that hard once you get the hang of it. Here are the basics to help make the baby shower planning easy and fun too.

First on the checklist is the place or venue where you will have the baby shower. Every place is perfect, as long as the mom-to-be or parents-to-be are comfortable with the choice. So, always seek the mom-to-be’s preference, whether to have it outdoors or in a restaurant or at home or in one of the family or friend’s house.

Once you have the place where to have the party, the next thing is to plan the guest list with the mom-to-be or parents-to-be. Will they prefer for a small and intimate gathering or a huge  co-ed baby shower.

Next is to plan on the date. Now, there is no right or wrong date and time. You only need to ensure that the mom-to-be is in her pregnancy stage where she is most comfortable. Because you want her to have fun and not feel stessed or tired.

Now, the next is the fun part. Decide on the baby shower theme. Whether you’re having a gender focused theme, when the baby’s gender is already known or a unisex theme for parents who prefer to learn of their baby’s gender after birth.  Now having a theme helps make everything come together, from decorations to invitations, and to food.

There are so many baby shower themes to choose from. Check out my previous posts on baby shower themes for some ideas.

Once you have the place, guest list and time. You can now work on sending invites. Make sure that you include all the significant information: place/venue, date and time, the theme, and the gift registry.  Now, a baby shower etiquette is to send the invitation to guests weeks (atleast 3-4 weeks) before the date. This is in order for them to book the date on their schedule, prepare for their gift/s, and also prepare for transportation for guests who will have to travel.

When you have all the basics organized, then you are good to go from here. The next one is the food. It ain’t a party without something to munch on or drink. Your food menu depends on your time, venue, number of guests, and also your theme. Prepare food that the mom-to-be will enjoy, and at the same time add to the decors and give the feels and vibe of your theme.

Then, the next is to work on your decorations. Depending on the theme and venue, you can have a lavish and elaborate decorations or go relatively simple. You don’t have to spend much for the decors actually, you can opt for DIY decors or welcome friends to help you decorate the place.

Last but certainly not the least, prepare fun activities and games that everyone will surely enjoy participating. And just like in every party, prepare for a little memento for your guests. It doesn’t have to be expensive, just something simple to serve as a thank you token.

Finally, wether you are having a small or big party, it helps to seek help from family and friends, especially those who may have experience hosting.

Goodluck on your first baby shower hosting.

Baby Shower Games and Activities

Celebrating the mom-to-be or parents-to-be’s journey towards parenthood, and their impending bundle of joy is a joyful and wonderful reason for family and friends to get together.

Surely you want the baby shower to be exciting, fun and memorable for the parents-to-be and the guests. What better way to get the fun going and keep the party spirits high than having some exhilirating and fun games for everyone.

If you are planning on what to activities to do, I have listed down a couple of great ideas for you. Without further ado, let’s run down the list of game categories:

  1.   Funny Games
These games are the best way to break the ice and get your guests to mingle and feel comfortable with each other. These games inspire laughter and puts everyone at ease and relaxed.

One example is to ask your guests to write down parenthood advice based on their own experience and some funny words of advice or quotes. Gather them all in a bowl and ask each guest to pick one and read aloud. Later, you can ask them to guess who wrote which one.

  2.   Lively Games
These are high energy games that invite everyone to move around. They are physical games and thus bring out the competitive side your guests.

Some famous lively games are balloon twister, pop the balloon, diaper clothesline, charades, among many others.

  3.   Trivia Games
These are another good ice breaker games that invite everyone to participate and provide opportunity for the guests to interact.

You can list down trivia questions focusing on the mom-to-be or the parents-to-be. Ingest a little humor in each question. This can be played by pair or in groups. You can also work your questions around famous people’s first child. Some showbiz or sports celebrities maybe or politicians or historical figures, and see who among the guests gets the most correct. This can also be played in pairs or groups for some added fun.

  4.   Word Games
These are games that can be played even on virtual baby showers.  For instance, you ask your guests to write down as many baby names as they can using the letters of the first name of the parents to be. You will be surprised to get some of the most unique and interesting names.

  5.   Diaper Games
These are hilarious games and will send everyone cracking. For instance, the most common of the diaper games is using various chocolate bars. Melt the chocolate bars by heating them on the microwave so that it resembles that of a baby poop. Smear each gooey or melted chocolate onto the diaper, keeping track ofcourse of which chocolate goes on which diaper. Now have each guests sniff the diaper and guess which chocolate is on them. It is best played in groups as well.

  6.   Animal Games
These are memory games that put your guests knowledge to a test. These type of games can be played individually, but best to always have your guests play in groups.

One example is the baby animal names where you list down a number of animals and then ask your guests to write opposite each animal the name of its baby. And see who gets the most correct answers.s

  8.   Layette Games
These games are not just fun, but it brings out the creative side of your guests and leaves something to the parents-to-be as a keepsake or something that are totally useful for both the baby and the parents-to-be.

These are games that give parents-to-be, especially first time parents, the feel and taste of what mommyhood or daddyhood will be like. Have your multi-task and set the timer for each challenge. These games are really hilarious and fun to play.
