I have always known the decision to have youngsters would change my life. The very first time it actually started to impact me was, accept it or not, selecting furniture for our first baby’s nursery. The entire house was decked out with beautiful furniture, clean modern lines and edgy artworks, where did a colorful play house fit into that? I was determined to give my baby a conventional childhood, but could I do it without giving up the beauty of my place?
As expected I knew that metal sculptures probably would not be the best nursery accessory, especially when this little one was up and running. So I turned to some more standard means of decoration. I found a brilliant wood worker who was a year just off from retirement and made his final days a great challenge! From a toy box with intricate woodcarving to cute carvings lining the cot, I fit attractive detail in where ever I could.
During my first trip to the local baby store, I was let down. I had been expecting a wide range, more than I could see in a day. Unfortunately I was in a little village and we were quite fortunate to have just two baby stores. So I started searching the web and before long I found exactly what I was after. From stunning second hand pieces that just required a coat of French polish to be functional to fashionable toys in bronzes, it was all out there online.
Nearly nine months in I had purchased pretty much everything, from cloth nappies (and on 2nd thought disposable nappies) to all the many standard baby accessories. The baby shower endowed me with a large spread of conscientiously and lovingly selected gifts, from boutique crayons and gift cards for bassinets to disposable nappies. But the best gift of all was a baby sculpture kit from my sister in law, a present I could not wait to use.
After a problem free birth, I brought my precious daughter home for the 1st time. Right before her first bath at home, my partner and I made some of the finest baby sculptures I have ever seen. Her tiny feet and hands all fit on the same bit of clay! Then we had to break out a canvas and our recently bought body paints for another initiation rite, bum prints!
